Community Foundation Scholarships

2010 Foundation Scholarships Process is Closed

For over 20 years the Thunder Bay Community Foundation has awarded some of Thunder Bay's most prestigious scholarships to students in the City and District.  Our process has traditionally included written applications and interviews for selected students.

In 2008 the Community Foundation changed the scholarship selection process in the following ways:

  • Students no longer apply directly to the Community Foundation for scholarships
  • High Schools nominate two students per school for our major scholarships
  • Nominees are asked to submit applications that include a transcript, essay, references and a list of community and school activities
  • The Community Foundation selects recipients from the pool of nominees
  • The Community Foundation does not conduct interviews
  • Students continue to be evaluated on academics, reference letters, school and community involvement and an essay.  Each of these components continues to be weighted equally.

For a more detailed explanation of the changes to our selection process please follow this link to view a letter that was sent to all high school administrators. >>>

No significant changes have been made to the process in 2010.

Nominations with accompanying nomination forms are due by April 26, 2010.

Students should ask their high school administration about the internal deadline, which will be earlier than April 26, 2010.

In addition to changes in our process, we have altered the number of scholarships we will be awarding.  This change is primarily due to a large endowment we received in 2006 establishing the Geraldine Ruth Rodgers Scholarships.  Below is a brief list of our scholarships:

Helen L. Dewar Scholarship Forms >>>
