Thunder Bay Community Foundation's Vision
Founded on trust, the Thunder Bay Community Foundation helps donors invest in our community by building permanent endowments that focus on the future.

Our Mission
To provide opportunities for the citizens of Thunder Bay to invest in the enrichment of our community.

Our History
In 1971, The Thunder Bay Community Foundation was incorporated by an Act of Legislature in the 4th session, of the 28th Legislature with Bill Pr3-1971. This was a private member’s bill ushered through by Mr. Jim Jessiman, MPP for Fort William.  Mr. John Carrel was the lead lawyer with participation of others in the firm of Carrel, Pustina, Zelinski.

The first meeting was held at the Holiday Inn, 9th December, 1971 with Mr. John Carrel as Chair attending with the original Board of Trustees: Mr. Norman Jenkens, Mr. Saul Laskin, Mr. Frank Mazur, Mr. Kenneth Moffatt, Mr. Nicholas Pustina, Mrs. Susan Simonsen, Mr. Grant Thompson and Mr. Raphael Wittenberg.

The Canadian Imperial Bank of Canada was made the Foundation’s bank with the Royal Trust Company appointed for trusts. The cost of incorporation was paid by the anonymous donor.

Over the past three decades we have distributed $2.5 million in grants and scholarships. To make this possible, we have received endowments from a wide variety of sources, most notably:

  • Initial gift from an anonymous donor
  • Proceeds from the sale of the Thunder Bay Lawn Bowling Club property
  • A gift from the Vulcan Machinery Employee Memorial Fund
  • Ms. Edith Dyke
  • Ms. Helen Dewar
  • Mr. John Adams
  • Estate of Bertil Nils Lundstrom
  • Estate of Mr. Arthur Widnall
  • Donation in memory of Jessie Spooner
  • Estate of William MacIsaac
  • Donation in memory Mr. Joseph Vezeau
  • Bequest Ruth Black Estate
  • Bequest J.D. McIntosh Estate
  • Ross A. Wilson
  • John A. McLean
  • Dr. S. Penny Petrone
  • Roy S. Rodgers and Geraldine R. Rodgers
  • Victor and Hanna Stevenson

Today we hold in trust almost $6 million dollars in assets.  From this foundation we distribute grants and scholarships to worthy causes and individuals in the District of Thunder Bay. Our mission is to provide opportunities for the citizens of Thunder Bay to invest in the enrichment of their community.
